What Affects Laser Tattoo Removal? | Bourne Beauty Tattoo Removal Stockport

Discover the main factors that affect laser tattoo removal, including ink depth, colour, density, age, immune system and skin type.

One of the most common questions we hear at Bourne Beauty Tattoo Removal is:

"How many sessions will my tattoo take to remove?"

The honest answer is that every tattoo responds differently. Laser tattoo removal is a science, and the speed of removal depends on several important factors including the tattoo's depth, ink density, colour, age, placement and your body's immune system.

1. Ink Depth (How Deep the Tattoo Sits)

The deeper the pigment sits in the skin, the more treatments are usually required.

Professional tattoos are placed consistently into the dermis, making them deeper and more saturated. Amateur tattoos often sit at uneven depths and may fade more quickly because the ink is less concentrated.

2. Ink Quantity & Density

A heavily saturated tattoo contains significantly more pigment than a fine line design.

More ink means:

  • More laser energy is needed over multiple sessions.

  • The body has more fragmented pigment to remove.

  • Blackout tattoos usually require the longest treatment course.

Dense areas often lighten gradually rather than disappearing evenly.

3. Tattoo Colour Matters

Different colours absorb different wavelengths of laser light.

Our Active Q-Switch Nd:YAG laser is particularly effective on black and dark pigments, while some colours can require additional treatment approaches.

4. The Age of Your Tattoo

Older tattoos often respond faster because the body has already begun breaking down small amounts of pigment naturally over the years.

A tattoo that is 15 years old may fade differently from one that is only 12 months old, even if they look similar.

Age can improve removal because:

  • Some pigment has already dispersed.

  • The immune system has gradually removed tiny particles.

  • The ink is often less dense than when first applied.

5. Skin Type (Fitzpatrick Scale)

Your skin tone influences how laser settings are selected.

At Bourne Beauty, every client receives a Fitzpatrick skin assessment before treatment to ensure the safest and most effective settings.

Darker skin types can absolutely be treated, but treatment parameters are adjusted to minimise the risk of pigmentation changes while still achieving excellent fading.

6. Your Immune System Is the Real Hero

Many people think the laser removes the tattoo. In reality, your immune system removes the ink.

The laser simply breaks the pigment into pieces small enough for immune cells called macrophages to carry away.

Things that may support normal healing include:

  • Staying well hydrated

  • Regular exercise

  • Good circulation

  • Not smoking where possible

  • Allowing adequate time between sessions

This is one reason treatments are usually spaced 6–8 weeks apart.

7. Tattoo Location on the Body

Areas with better blood circulation often respond more quickly than areas further from the heart.

Area

Typical Response

Chest & upper back

Often quicker

Upper arms

Good

Forearms

Moderate

Hands & fingers

Slower

Ankles & feet

Often slowest

Poor circulation means fragmented ink can take longer to clear.

8. Scarring & Previous Skin Trauma

Existing scar tissue can influence how evenly the laser reaches the pigment.

Scars do not always prevent successful tattoo removal, but they may:

  • Slow fading

  • Create uneven pigment clearance

  • Require careful adjustment of laser settings

A thorough consultation helps identify this before treatment begins.
